Learn from two UC Davis College of Engineering experts, Michele Barbato and Zhaodan Kong, as they share their innovative work and research on wildfire detection and prevention and how their work can make our communities safer from this natural hazard.

Wildfires are one of the most significant natural hazards threatening the United States. With wildfires burning bigger, hotter and spreading out of control faster, California has recorded six of the seven largest wildfires in its history since 2020. The increased frequency and intensity of these fires due to climate change and urban expansion make early detection and innovative prevention methods more critical than ever.

Zhaodan Kong, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, will share how unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) drone swarms can impact quicker firefighting response times and reduce the occurrence of massive fires.

Michele Barbato, professor of civil and environmental engineering, will speak to how wildfire emissions research and the development of fire-resistant and sustainable building materials reduce wildfire risk and losses.
